F1 set for Montreal return in 2010?

Formula One fans and drivers alike will be delighted to hear that Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve may return to the F1 calendar in 2010.

Montreal was one of the most popular stops on the F1 circuit before the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped for the 2009 season after a row over fees between F1 rights holder Bernie Ecclestone and the track's promoters.

Not only that, the last two runnings of the race produced plenty of drama for fans with Robert Kubica involved in a spectacular crash in 2007 as Lewis Hamilton landed his maiden F1 victory before their fortunes were reversed 12 months later when Hamilton was involved in a pit-lane crash and Kubica went on to victory.

Not only that but away from the circuit, the Quebec city provides a perfect venue with its vibrant nightlife and atmospheric old town.

According to reports, Ecclestone has hinted that a deal had been reached to reinstate the Canadian Grand Prix for next season.

“We have an in-principle agreement of how we're going to make the race happen,” the F1 supremo told reporters.

With federal and provincial governments ready to meet the shortfall required to see the street circuit return to the F1 calendar, it looks like a deal can be finalised in the next few weeks in order for the Canadian GP to make the deadline for the 2010 calendar.

And that's good news for sports travel fans.

Buehrle pitches perfect game in Chicago

Baseball is a game of statistics, of numbers, and none come as pure as 27. That's the minimum allowable 27 batters up to bat – three per side in each of a game's nine innings - and all of them sent back to the dugout.

If a lone pitcher achieves all 27 outs in those nine innings without the batting side managing a ‘hit’, a 'walk' or batter advancing to first base by getting hit by a pitch, then that becomes known as a perfect game.

So, 27 up and 27 down equals baseball perfection.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle became just the 17th man in Major League Baseball history to throw a perfect game when on Thursday afternoon at US Cellular Field he closed out a 5-0 victory for his side over the Tampa Bay Rays.

It was the first perfect game since Randy Johnson achieved the feat five years ago and it took 30-year-old Buehrle 116 pitches, including six strikeouts.

Buehrle's achievement comes during a golden period in the White Sox pitcher's career. His record for the 2009 season stands at 11 victories and three defeats and he has won 15 with only only one defeat at home in his last 21 home starts there since the 2008 mid-season All-Star Game break.

NextBigSportsEvent.com went to a White Sox game recently and had enjoyed a great sporting spectacle during a sportacular week in Chicago. We highly recommend the Windy City as a destination for relishing the very best sports experiences.

Check out our guide to enjoying Chicago and getting the very best out of one of the best sporting destinations on the planet.

Boxing bids to grab attention once more with Super Six Series

The much-maligned sport of boxing took a giant leap into the future on Monday as six world-class super-middleweights checked their egos, pride and reputations in at the Madison Square Garden cloakroom and committed to a two-year, winner takes all tournament.

WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch of England, Denmark's Mikkel Kessler, the WBA titleholder, Germany's former middlweight kingpin Arthur Abraham, former undisputed middleweight champ Jermain Taylor and former US Olympic medallists Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward will fight each other over the next two years, each committing to a three-fight group series followed by semi-finals and a final in 2011 that is designed to have fans rushing to get tickets and send viewers flocking to their armchairs for one TV superfight after another.

Froch (25-0, 20KOs) begins his three-fight group campaign, which offers two points for a victory with a bonus point for a knockout or TKO, at the Nottingham Arena in October with a title defence against American Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs).

Kessler (41-1, 31 KOs) will open his campaign against former Olympic gold medallist Ward (19-0, 12 KOs), while Abraham (30-0, 24 KOs) relinquished his IBF middlweight crown to take Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs), a final-round stoppage victim of Froch's last time out at the MGM Grand Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut in April.

The opening skirmishes are each mouthwatering prospects for fight fans and the Showtime TV bosses that have put it together are promising the fights will not be pay-per-view events, so hats off to all concerned for buying into the concept.

Frankly, NextBigSportsEvent.com is staggered that Showtime managed to get five promoters to agree to sign the same piece of paper sanctioning the Super Six World Boxing Classic when it usually takes months of posturing, prevaricating and petulance just to get two fighters in the ring together.

There could be some great experiences on offer for passionate travelling sports fans so let's hope it all comes off and all that potentially top-notch boxing action comes to fruition over the next couple of years.

Keep checking back with us here at NextBigSportsEvent.com for further announcements and ticket news as dates and venues are finalised.

Defending champ Harrington heads to Turnberry 'in trepidation'

Check out the latest blog from Irish golf expert Brian Keogh at his website http://www.irishgolfdesk.com/. If anyone knows the state of the defending champion's game and mind heading into next week's Open at Turnberry it's Brian.

"Padraig Harrington will head to Turnberry feeling more like Forrest Gump than a man bidding to win a hat-trick of Claret Jugs."

Wimbledon match sparks betting alert

It may be strawberries and cream, long lines to get in and a trudge back to the tube station for most of us but Wimbledon is also a betting opportunity and there's already something fishy going on.

A Wimbledon men's first round match is under investigation after unusual betting patterns were reported.

Although there is no suggestion of wrongdoing, online bookmaker Betfair said the flow of bets on Austrian number 26 seed Jurgen Melzer's 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over America's Wayne Odesnik were "very visible".

The Tennis Integrity Unit is expected to look into the match.
