F1 set for Montreal return in 2010?
Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 12:08PM Formula One fans and drivers alike will be delighted to hear that Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve may return to the F1 calendar in 2010.
Montreal was one of the most popular stops on the F1 circuit before the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped for the 2009 season after a row over fees between F1 rights holder Bernie Ecclestone and the track's promoters.
Not only that, the last two runnings of the race produced plenty of drama for fans with Robert Kubica involved in a spectacular crash in 2007 as Lewis Hamilton landed his maiden F1 victory before their fortunes were reversed 12 months later when Hamilton was involved in a pit-lane crash and Kubica went on to victory.
Not only that but away from the circuit, the Quebec city provides a perfect venue with its vibrant nightlife and atmospheric old town.
According to reports, Ecclestone has hinted that a deal had been reached to reinstate the Canadian Grand Prix for next season.
“We have an in-principle agreement of how we're going to make the race happen,” the F1 supremo told reporters.
With federal and provincial governments ready to meet the shortfall required to see the street circuit return to the F1 calendar, it looks like a deal can be finalised in the next few weeks in order for the Canadian GP to make the deadline for the 2010 calendar.
And that's good news for sports travel fans.
